DTM, Inc. is an independent family owned and operated company, founded and incorporated in 1982 by Joseph C. Montesano. We are dedicated to ensuring the safe, systematic performance of high-traffic vertical and linear transport.
Our team is comprised of experienced, highly qualified professionals, with excellent references and a broad range of project training. You will find at DTM Inc. experience from such prestigious corporations as Westinghouse, Millar Elevator, Schindler Elevator & NYC Transit. Our past and present experiences inform our instinctive troubleshooters and design experts on how to plan for and avoid future problems, and, most importantly, handle crises.
Our founder, Joseph Montesano worked for Westinghouse Elevator Company for 33 years, at a time when many building owners relied on engineering and mechanical firms to help develop building designs with the architects in reference to the vertical transportation systems. It was also common for large manufacturers to provide this type of engineering service free of charge to their clients when they were designing new buildings. As the economy tightened and there was accountability within firms to control costs, large manufacturers ceased to provide this service.
Joseph Montesano realized that there was an opportunity and that there would be a demand for an independent expert to give advice to the owners and architects as the skyline of the city continued to grow.
Demand turned out to be greater than Joseph Montesano anticipated, prompting the relocation from a dining room to the basement to, finally, DTM’s current headquarters in a historic two-story house in College Point, New York. From the vision of having a one-man operation in an attempt to keep himself busy, while having a hand in designing some of Manhattan’s new high rises, the business vastly advanced to the point of needing to hire employees to help with field surveys, design and engineering.
In 1984, Nicholas J. Montesano joined his father in moving DTM forward. Nicholas Montesano began his career as an apprentice at Millar Elevator Industries, working his way to becoming a maintenance mechanic before joining DTM. It is this hands-on experience that gives DTM an edge and allows us to work with owners and architects, and bridge the gap with Elevator Companies.
Over the past three decades, DTM has grown into an experienced firm, which has, as Joseph Montesano originally envisioned, played a large role in building and preserving NYC.
Everything Old is New Again
It all started with Silverstein Properties purchasing The Equitable Building, 120 Broadway over 35 years ago and we are honored to come full circle with not only being the consultant for the past 35 years but now we are proud tenants as well.
